The chorus is about his desire, he wants the inspiration, as the fire/desire never stops, and ultimately he knows when all is said and done, he will be inspired, as he hears the promise of his Orpheus sing. He finds that the "voices" still have stories to tell, that he still has something to express. Verse 3 he talks of the obstacles in life being the fuel for the fire. ![]() Everything else has fallen to the wayside, like the people he knew never cared, but Orpheus has stayed by his side. ![]() In verse two he finds inspiration, the "sunlight falls" and his "wings open wide". He struggles with words (lyrics perhaps) while his Orpheus lays on his back, there is no inspiration. In verse 1 he stands firm against the pressures though he has been tempted to "give up the ghost". I think Orpheus represents his inspiration as a musician. Orpheus being the greatest poet and musician of Ancient Greece, which Sylvian will have known having an interest in this myth (Eurydice, Orpheus's wife, was also in the title of a Sylvian track). I think this song is about a search for inspiration, the need to create music and the pressures associated with the expectations put on you. I'm gonna take a guess at this beautiful song, as nobody seems to have tried to look for the meaning. Please believe, when this joke is tired of laughing Of the power struggles in heaven and hellīut we feel secure against such mighty dreamsĪs orpheus sings of the promise tomorrow may bring Were fuel for the fire and straw for our backs I will hear the promise of my orpheus singīut all of the hurdles that fell in our laps I struggle with words for fear that they'll hearīut orpheus sleeps on his back still dead to the worldĪnd bottles that tumble and crash on the stairsĪre just so many people I knew never caredĪre a stronghold of pleasures I couldn't regretīut the baggage is swallowed up by the tideĪs orpheus keeps to his promise and stays by my sideīelieve me, when this joke is tired of laughing That shifts between darkness and shadowy light Who knows, maybe even aware of not knowing exactly how and how long their love will last. The temptations to leave or to give up the ghost And they sing their love with this awareness. Yet the melancholy remains, because the two are “a million miles away”. The two love each other, and they are aware of it, they also manage to stay close as two true lovers ( Your shadow follows me all day/ Making sure that I’m okay). ![]() It is therefore a song of confirmation and also of sadness. It is advisable to read them while listening to the song above, so as to understand who sings each verse. The verses are sung from both points of view, as if it were a dialogue. The text was already meant to be sung in duet. As the songwriter confirmed, the song was written straight after reading the script of the film, so everything suggests that Karen O, writing it, had the idea of a love relationship in mind, where the two protagonists are not physically close. The song is a melancholy ballad in which two lovers talk to each other, renewing their love and remembering how far apart they are.
